- Avoid having to number steps
- Keep order defined in templates without using numbering
- less impact when steps are added or deleted
- Allows to keep steps in logical order when using groupings in DD global view (as opposed to alpha order)
NB if a hidden column is sorted it will supersede the sort on visibile columns if it is sorted by the hidden column first
